Hello and problem with stub axles
Hello and problem with stub axles
Hello together,
since some minutes I have an account here, so I want to say hello.
Our TC and we are sitting here in the south of Germany, where there are many mountains and therefore our TC has recently got a supercharger with impressive results. The car was restored twenty years ago by a friendly dutch man, who did it for his wife. Sadly, shortly after the car was ready, the lady got sick and some years later she died. Last year the car was sold and we are happy to be the new owners to keep the car in honour.
Everything's working fine, but yesterday I noticed some play in the front wheel bearings, which I wanted to fix. By that way I saw the stub axles being not in that state I want to have it. Knowing that this is a debile point I tried to get a replacement. Seems to be a hopless try. Is there anywhere a source for stub axles or what should to be done ?
Hope for your help.
Best regards
Lindi

Re: Hello and problem with stub axles
Spindles can be replaced by two people I know, one in Canada and one in the US. Bob Grunau sells new spindle inserts, which he can properly weld in place. They are very nicely finished and made, and the only difference is the nut required.
Doug Pelton of From the Frame Up also sells (and, I assume, installs) them, and his catalog is a Godsend to TC owners and restorers. His videos are also very worthwhile, and his parts are spot-on correct, always.
I trust you are also having your Pitman arms magnafluxed?
We are happy to answer whatever questions you have.

Hello together,
thanks for your news.
I heard about Bob Grunau. Problem is shippng costs a lot. Somebody in Europe would be much easier.
Brown and Gammons list this item actually as not on stock. Sent them a mail and hope to hear from them.
Crack testing is not yet done and we will include the pitman arm, too.
Let's look how things go foreward.
Best regards

In the UK I would also write to John James, the editor of TTT2 (an EXCELLENT TC source), and Roger Furneaux, at Mad Metrics. Both have much TC experience, both sell various parts, and I am sure can be of help to you.

Re: Hello and problem with stub axles
Hi Tom,
thanks a lot!
Was trying to get Roger Furneaux at the phone yesterday, but it is said to be a bit difficult, so I will try on. John James is a new tip for me. Will try him. TTT2 is well known to me as a very good source for help.
One word in general.
My first experience here, what I learned from MG-people in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, and everything else relating MG Ts is a very pleasing and heartwarming thing. I am in old cars for more than 30 years with various marques. Never met such helpful and friendly people like the MG people. The TC being the finish of our small collection, I am very happy not have missed this!

Re: Hello and problem with stub axles
Hi Lind
There I have buy my TWO spindles
Sorry for delay -but I was in search of the Invoice in january 2017
http://abingdonspares.com/front-end-steering-tc/
costs are $125,95 each- and shipping for the two are $21.38 -no tax
i don't remember if I have paid Customs charge at the arrival in UE
You must control if they are already in production
NOTE:
The Spindles (this is the name in USA) aren't actually jet mounted on my TC- I am waiting that my old experienced mechanic will be free
but works -due the big interference_need -press 12 ton - heat to 300°C the pieces- and frozen with dry ice
for the heads

Searunner, apart from my name, if I was nearer I would do that for you.....
However if you fancy a few days in the UK, bring the car and go home with new spindles.

Re: Hello and problem with stub axles
Hi Searunner,
thanks for the idea with the spindles. Up to now, I came not nearer to this because of the tricky operation. I don't have the facilities therefore and I fear, my old screwer friend hasn't it either.
In your region, is this easyily to be made? We are often in Trentino, so perhaps this would be a way to give the parts over the winter to a skilled mechanic?
I am always a bit afraid of sending parts away. Too often something has come away, and with those rare parts...
So I'd better bring them personally to the place where a work should be done.
Best regards

Hi Lindy
I hnow, is very difficult to have a skilled mechanic ready to work on our oldest cars
But my strategy is have the pieces ready- to catch the good rare occasion when shop are empty
and friend are favourable disposed

Re: Hello and problem with stub axles
Highly recommend Bob's front spindle inserts. My '37 axles were both cracked when tested. Local machinist did a good job fitting them and NTG supplies the MGA castle nuts. If you have a copy of "TC's Forever" see what can happen if the axle breaks. Can be fatal!!
