MG TA fuel line - tank - pump

Post by Franz Tenbrock » Fri Jul 20, 2018 1:44 pm

Hallo together,
somebody sometimes has done some changings on the fuel line, so i have a Problem, the engine has not enough fuel.
From teh back of the car are two copper lines to the middle of the car, there is a tap , from the tap one copper line goes to the pump, not straight but wavy.
So tomorrow we will take of the tank :? the fuel we have taken away today.
so what will happen ?????

with google and here to i have found no information
i found this
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Filter-Screen- ... nav=SEARCH
so at the bottom of the tank there are two screes, can i open both???
what is the reserve of them the left from the back of the car ?

Where can i find some information or pictures

Hi Franz Greeting from Australia Welcome to TA ownership once you get over these problems you will find that TA s are fun to drive. If you have drained the fuel from the tank you can remove both nuts holding the fuel line into tank but get ready to catch the last drop of fuel you cant drain.

On my car from the back the right pipe is the main fuel supply. the pipe into the tank has a solid
tube going into the tank about 55mm this leaves about 15 litres in your tank as a reserve. The other pipe is your reserve fuel and does
not go into the tank. On your reserve tap the left pipe is main fuel supply. If you are removing the tank i suggest you put a handfull of small stones or nuts (count them first) into your tank and shake to remove rust and rubbish. When you remove stones count them again.
The fuel tap has cork inside that dries out and causes air leak that shows up under high engine speeds on hill climbing or accelleration.Dismantle the tap and check the cork soak in oil or cut new cork and also soak that in oil. When assembling the tap there is adjustment for compressing the cork make sure this is tight to stop the pump sucking air.finally make sure the tap is turned onto the main fuel supply and replace the reserve knob on the main tank position. When i use the reserve line i do not turn the knob as it is very easy to break.I lift the bonnet and turn the brass tap with a screw driver.
Hope this helps do not hesitate to ask more questions if you need to.

ok
it ake off the tank today and clean it about 4 hours work,
before i have been to hornbach buy some parts you see in the pictures,
i will put one for the fuel standard and the shorter one for the reserve
so the dirt fuel won t come to the fuel line,
after some years i should clean it again, now i know how to do it.

i soldering a 8 mm copper piece to the old part of the fuel line, so the fuel won t come from the ground with the dirt.
the 2 liitle pices are 10 mm copper line, this i will take to extend the old fuel line, i will place it to the original palce richt side in the front.
I hope tomorrow i can put the new fuel line to the car, polish it and paint it with zapponlack ;-)

Hallo
it is going on :-)

today i prepare the new fule line and reserv line.
8mm copper, at the back i took the old one, under the car and in the front i will join the whith this parts
at example !!
https://123stahl-shop.de/Schneidringver ... 6_191.html

this is necessary for me because i have no hydraulic ramp and the engine is in place.

i have to order some parts now because in my city nothing of this parts are to buy.
Schit, so i have to wait some days.

as you see i took of the bonnet to have more place to work,
then i prepare two parts of wood with two holes.
then i make a 90 corner, then i push this part from right side to left side
then i took off the part which fix the cooler , then it was a little bit difficult becaus the pipe has to take an other corner down, for this i took the wood with a 10 mm hole and round edge ( see the picture ) with it it is possible to make a really goor edge.
the i work from the back, i took the old pipe fix it to the tank and the new attachment at the frame, this was easy
the next step was the part on the pictures for the middle part.
The result you can see in the last picture, without the parts i have to order now.

G'Day Franz
You have been busy! I did not realize that you intended to make up new fuel lines. If you Google www.billdavis.org/MGTA go to site navigation then click on Fuel delivery. This is a great site that explains all you need to know. The rest of his site is very interesting for future reference.

Hallo
thanks for the link, i have seen the side bevore, but not the fuel line, i looked around in the internt for pictures, thei i found the way and the parts.
I don t want to use the original Reserve Petcock, it will be very expensive and a lot of Problems.
I baught a new one, i hope without Problems, it is from brass. So it is like original but not original.
With the fuel filter i have to see...
To fit the fuel line i took holes which have been made in the past, the copper line i polished and paint it with zappon. The aspiration in the tank i change too , see above. So i hope that it works and the car gets enough fuel, that was the problem before, dirt dirt dirt grrrrr

next step today, 2 hours
in the next city i get some parts i need so it goes on, the weather is os fine here and i can t drive ...

so as you see i have found some 1mm copper in my garage, i cut about 2 cm wide a stripe from it
then it make some clinch for the fuel line
everyone sees how i do it ;-)
tomorrow the tap will arrive here so it goes on tomorrow but the most important parts will come on Friday

I live here in a little city and the parts i need are really especially so it took time to get it.

The next work willbe an elektronic fan, the engine has only 4 little wings, not enpough for the summer
so i will do the same as i have done at my Spartan 3.0 Essex

https://www.conrad.de/de/temperaturscha ... 639483!!!g!!

and

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Universal-Motor ... 2296556423

so i am able to adu´just it perfectly.

but as i see in the moment, there is no place, i have only 4 cm from the cooler to the metal fan
shit

and in the front of the cooler is no place too

....fan, the engine has only 4 little wings,....
Hi Franz
I don't know TA fuel pipes system -
BUT I know well the "T" cooling system TC -TD-
The 4 little metallic wings of the fan must be changed- if you have serious overheat problem as me- with a plastic
7 blade or 6 blade fan from MG B or Modern Midget- this are the effective solution of the problem
sorry haven't a photos -my plastic fan are black painted- and on the photos are invisible

the Electric fan can be a solution, but must cover the upper part of the radiator-that aren't covered by the
engine fan and works only when the car is in movement

Hi Franz
I don't know TA FAN
but NTG have one TA fan spacer with 4 holes so I suppose that fan blades
have four bolts also on TA as my TC ( NOTE NTG have on catalog a lot of of pieces for TA (also the bolts))
https://www.mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p ... Used).html
this tt2 article can help you (on the photos I can see 4 holes on the pulley -and short little bolts, indicates that fan is mounted directly on it )
http://ttypes.org/ttt2/mg-ta-water-pump-mgb-fan

Due the request the 7 blade fan have the price DOUBLED
This LateMG Midget Fan -works fine on my TC- and costs is half

G'Day Franz
The TA fan is held on by 4 bolts however you have a xpjm engine in your car which is a smaller bore xpag. The fan should still be held on by 4 bolts. When you receive your mgb fan the 4 mounting holes will probably be for 8mm bolts. The bolts on theengine are only 6mm.You will have to cut 4 lengths of tubing to make up spacers so the bolts are a snug fit. Before I had my engine reconditioned it used to run hot.I fitted a mgb fan and a thin electric fan in front of my radiator behind the slats. My car now runs cool and i have never used the electric fan.Idont know if the cooler running is due to the mgb fan or the fact that the engine has been reconditioned.

Hallo
today i nearly finished the fuel line, posting.php?mode=reply&f=2&t=913&sid=17 ... 46055e65ae#
the reserve tap is now placed at the right place, i only have to welder a VA2 holder to fix it
the line is ok and the new wonderful fuel filter ist running perfekt,
first i had a little problem with air coming to the fuel line
but it was solved in minutes.

fuel to the tank, and then start again, and he runs

later i have to make a reneval ? from the tap to the dashboard, but this will be easy
perhaps i print a replica of the knop with my cr-10 ;-)

this was the first projekt on my TA

Hi Franz,
before you start the engine and kill it, you have changed the and filter I think,
read following carefully,
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=468
It is a must to prime the oil pump before you start the engine!
Viel Spaß

Today i test my new wig welding maschine
i have only a few hours trying to weld va2
it is much more tricky than steal
but for me it is good enough

i will extend the tap to the dashboard in the next step,
i took a 4,5mm nut for it, make a m4 thread so that it so i can can fix it on the new tap
i will take a 5mm brass pole, make a hex at the end to fix it in the nut
but it have to buy a 5 mm brass first

it was realy hot the last weeks here, so i will fix 2 120 mm computer fans to the cooler,
they will start wenn temperature is over 50 degrees and stop when temperatue less than 50
i will be able to change temperature
