Manifold studs

Should I be screwing the longer end or the shorter end of the manifold studs into the block? Thank you.

Niether - if you mean the long studs to hold both instake and exhaust manifolds, the shorter end goes into the head, not the block. The short end of a stud goes into the permanent part - the short end of the head studs go into the block, the short end of the exhaust manifold studs go into the exhaust manifold flange, and the short end of the valve cover studs goes into the head.
