TC pinion housing setup

I need the help of someone knowledgable about setting up the original TC differential. Here's my problem/ question.
The pinion housing is set up for the pinion which contains a rear plain roller bearing for lateral stability and a front double- row ball bearing for longitudinal / axial placement. How is the front double-row bearing located? Is it by shimming the spacer on the pinion gear shaft, or by shimming the front bearing outer race by using shims in the pinion housing cap? When I removed my pinion housing complete(before disassembly) the entire pinion shaft, with prop shaft flange attached could move axially - fore and aft-about 1/8 inch! No wonder my diff was making unhappy noises on the over run. The pinion I head should not be able to float about axially as far as I know. Thankfully crown wheel and pinion gears still look very nice. Also, the pinion bearings have been replaced in the past....no brass carriers for the balls or rollers...so that is good...and the bearings and races also look and sound fine.

So, I need to get this figured out. It looks to me like whoever had this unit apart in the past did NOT assemble it properly
I have read the tech article on diff setup ( I think by Roger Furneau - but not sure) however the article was not clear to me on this point. Thanks for all info.

Already looked at that site- info as referenced above. I need a little more tech detail about the pinion housing set up itself

Obviously the pinion should not move axially 1/8". Lucky you did not screw up the gears. Front double row ball bearing is SKF3305, or equivalent. Rear parallel roller is SKF305 as I recall. BUT, way better bearings if you use tapered roller bearings on the pinion, front and back. Possibly previous rebuild installed a too narrow front ball thrust bearing allowing the outer race to move in the pinion sleeve??

The front...new- Double race ball bearing measures exactly 1.00" on the outer race. Ie., total bearing thickness.

Sorry this is a little late.
I had a similar problem and found that the outer race on the outer bearing had such a large outer radius that it quickly hammered the edge of the shoulder it should rest against. Someone on list pointed out that I probably had the wrong part number brg.
