Does anybody know the story of TC3409?
Perhaps it rebuilt with a new frame?
Found this on Ebay:

Too big of a restoration project for me! ;-)

OHH, This is strange...this car chassis number is listed to our group!
TC 3409 ---- Meismer, Rolland, Burlington, IA, USA, ----- rmeismer1@aol.com
1947, XPAG 3796
There must be an interesting story behind this poor stripped chassis now located in Illinois?

As I recall, Roland died recently and his widow was trying to sell his TC but I thought that car was complete.....perhaps he also had a chassis.

I had the winning bid on TC3409, and will be arranging to have it picked up and shipped to me.
According to the seller, the frame was donated to the Vintage MG car club of Chicago. The seller sold the frame for the club. I will be trying to discover other details about what seems to have recently been a complete car.

Thanks, Ray. As of this weekend, I have a complete door frame cut, and the rest of the wood milled and jointed. And now the chassis. I have a long way to go ...

Sorry, I didn't mean for that last message to go out to the list. And I regret this one, too.

Mark-
Using a genuine chassis will give you a TC base that no one from the list would question. There is nothing neater than a well-built special.

Don't apologise to me, mate... that's completely unnecessary, for I have you up there on the top shelf. Likewise, if I can help in any way, hit send.

Hello Sherwood: Are you the guy who had the special gaskets made for TC fuel sending units made? Terminal smugness had set in as my tank was dry all summer, but very weepy over the weekend. If it's not you, please excuse.

Re: Does anybody know the story of TC3409?
I am still monitoring this list and am concerned as to the TC3409. My husband, Rolland, completely restored a car with title to this number. I have records showing the background of this car. The car is still in my possession. Any questions should be sent to me directly.

I'll bet there is either some dislexia or missed digit....These things happen when we humans get involved. Someone needs to check both chassis (what's the plural?). Just had a thought........maybe someone is working with the body #.

Re: Does anybody know the story of TC3409?
I have no reason to doubt your word, Mrs. Meismer. I do not have any reason to doubt the word of the person who sold me the frame, either. It isn't in my possession yet, so I am a little perplexed, but not too much. There is an explanation for the discrepancy, and it will be worked out in due course..

Re: Does anybody know the story of TC3409?
Since Mark's frame is damaged, I would suspect that Rolland may have replaced the original frame in his car when he restored it. I don't see it too much in MGs, but this is quite common with Morgans.

Re: Does anybody know the story of TC3409?
The way the chassis were stamped on MG's of all era's, it is very easy to confuse an 8 for a 3 or a 9 for a 6 or other combinations. Sometimes the number is buried under decades of grease and old paint and cannot even be found until its exposed by lots of scraping. Mark when you get the frame, take a careful look at the number under magnifier.

Re: Does anybody know the story of TC3409?
Thanks Dave, Charles, and Terry, for speculations on the TC3409 discrepancy, one of which -- or all of which! -- may be correct. Terry's is especially convincing to me, having tried to authenticate products from a certain software company in Washington state that thinks it's cute to use an old computer font for its 30-digit key codes. More than once I've called one of Bill's hapless employees and screamed at them until they convinced me that what I thought was an "8" was in fact a "B."
In the meantime, I'm trying not to rue the decision to restore, which has run into a (mild) complication within 72 hours of my purchase! It will all work out. Won't it? ;-)

Re: Does anybody know the story of TC3409?
Mrs Meismer, Mark et all,
As Terry, and others have said, it is not unusual to have ownerships, data plates and chassis numbers mixed up on old MG cars. A few examples:
1-I bought TC-7118 in 1965, it had that number on the brass data plate and was road registered under TC-7118. I never checked the actual chassis number. I sold the car after about 15 years and now it seems that TC-7118 is not the actual chassis number. The chassis has a different number.
2-I bought a TC a few years ago, I knew the various owners since 1969. The car came with Ontario ownership as TC-4258, brass data plate said TC-6280. So I thought I better check the actual chassis number on the frame to see which was correct. It was TC-5302. Rats, 3 numbers for the same car. I called the 1969 owner and asked him if he had the TC-5302 brass data plate, he did and the car is now reunited with its correct data plate and correctly registered as TC-5302.
3-It was not unusual for cars to be registered by engine number in the USA. TC-2362 is registered as XPAG- 3037 in Michigan. Now properly registered as TC-2362 in Ontario.
4-TA-2645 was registered in Ohio as MPJG-???? ( can't remember the number ). Imported into Ontario. Then properly registered in Ontario as TA-2645.
So as several people have stated, you need to check the ACTUAL chassis number on the outside of the left front dumb iron to determine exactly which car you own. The title to a car may be different from the actual chassis number.
I hope this helps.
Best regards, Bob Grunau
