oil filter canister leak

had the joy of having my TC oil canister leak at the middle seam. short of replacing it with one of the modern
spin on units, my thought is soldering the seam. i believe this should work. anyone else have this happen and what was your solution?

There were a handful of oil filters supplied as original and as after-market, and some detailing of which you have is needed.

So I take it this is an original style single piece, disposable canister? I think the trouble you would have with soldering would be the oil in the seam preventing solder from sticking. You could always try crimping it down tighter. If it's only a tiny weep, I think I would live with it. If it's leaking a lot then a replacement is probably best. I am a huge fan of spin on adapters which use modern filters on them. In the long run it's a much cheaper and easier filtration solution. If you want a vintage Monaro TC filter canister, I have one for sale. But for pure ease of use, I still recommend spin on adapters.

well, i cleaned everything up including bead blasting, and heated up the seam area to burn out any remaining oil etc,
and laid solder all way around . every thing looked good, so proceeded to clean up and do a pressure leak test with
good results. no leaks and should be good to go. will give it a good coat of paint and reinstall.

Does the bottom unscrew for a replaceable filter element?

People started getting rid of those original style filters back in the early 50's. Good for a car show? I used an old V8 relocation kit I had sitting around. Takes a large filter like FL-1A or PL30001 shown. Tight fit but filter never rubs. No modifications, except to "new" aluminum mount. Easy to change filter with oil change. Fill up with oil before screwing on, and I have never lost prime.

What you have is an after-market replacement filter housing probably sold by Moss back in the day, when replacement sock-type filters were available. When available now, they are expensive.

The FAR better solution is to get a spin-off filter unit from Abingdon, Moss or Bob Grunau, which will not only provide much better filtering, but will encourage more frequent changing. If you want to have an original look and don't mind spending the extra money, Doug Pelton at From the Frame Up sells a spin-off filter adapter hidden inside what appears to be an original vertical filter can.

Externally it's indistinguishable from an original canister filter I have.

The spin-on filters sold by Grunau and Taras are my choice. If you paint the adapter and filter, it will fool just about anyone into thinking it's an original.

Bob Grunau in Canada and Butch Taras in California both manufacture parts for vintage MGs. They also both manufacture spin-on adapters, which are functionally identical, just with some visual differences. Both are members of this forum.
